RVRS is the first ground 9-1-1 agency in Virginia to implement ultrasonography as part of its normal patient care protocols, helping to guide diagnosis and care of critically ill trauma and medical patients.
Drawing from front-line medicine on the battlefield, and relying on the latest civilian clinical science, RVRS is the first agency in Central Virginia to begin administering Tranexamic Acid to our most severely injured patients.
Uncontrolled hemorrhage is the number one cause of mortality in patients who have experienced trauma; RVRS providers were the first in the region to be trained and equipped to get special medicated gauze directly to the site of the bleed.
As out-of-hospital clinicians, we believe that controlling patients’ pain is very important; we also believe that large doses of narcotics are not always necessary. RVRS is the first agency in the region to implement non-narcotic analgesia into our regular clinical practice.
We believe that we can have the most impact on EMS by encouraging other agencies to incorporate the best clinical science into their practice. We are currently in the process of revising all of our protocols and releasing them as free, “open source” material.
